Fieldfare January Photo of the Month
This Fieldfare photo was taken in January in the North West of England on a Canon EOS 5D Mark III.
The Fieldfare is a migratory bird that breeds in the woodlands and scrub or northern Europe and Asia. Part of the the thrush family the Fieldfare is migratory and commonly northern birds fly south for winter. The Fieldfare is considered very rare in the British Isles yet winters in large numbers in the United Kingdom, Southern Europe and North Africa. The Fieldfare is omnivorous and feasts on a wide range of fare including molluscs, earthworms and insects in the summer months and seeds, grains and berries in the cold winter months.
Migrating Fieldfares are often seen in the company of Redwings forming large flocks. Fieldfares are on average about 25cm in length with a grey neck, crown and rump accompanied by a plain brown back and dark wings. Fieldfare wings and tails have a white undercarriage and their breasts and sides are heavily spotted.
